This week, I sit down with Rouse Lawyer’s Managing Partner, Matthew Rouse. Matthew began Rouse Lawyers 15 years ago and practices in mid-market mergers & acquisitions and general corporate advisory.
Why a career law?
I come from a family of doctors, but I can’t stand the sight of blood. Law seemed the next best thing without having to conquer my phobia!
Why set up Rouse?
After working in a top tier firm as a commercial lawyer in a large team, I decided that environment was not for me. I moved in house with a start-up and took a small interest in that company. We went onto raise capital and do some exciting things, but ultimately it wasn’t the unicorn I had hoped. In that environment, and after being asked to provide legal assistance to a number of contacts I had made, I decided that opening a legal practice might be good idea… to scratch my entrepreneurial itch.
What’s the best part of the job?
The best part of the job is investing in people and seeing them grow.
What’s your greatest career achievement?
Building the mid-market M&A practice that we currently enjoy at Rouse.
What do you do outside of work?
My young family keeps me busy. I am a rugby league and Wests Tigers fan (tragic).
Tell me an interesting fact about yourself?
I have hiked Mt Kilimanjaro and the Overland Track in Tasmania.
